Through our innovative curriculum, Merici seeks to nurture within our students a lifelong love of learning, an ability to think critically and independently and a belief in their ability to work towards their chosen goals.
Our students traditionally have found their niche in a diverse range of career paths. Our graduating students are well represented across the disciplines within the universities and other higher learning institutions in Canberra and beyond.
The curriculum at Merici College is designed to develop responsibility for active learning, with students becoming increasingly involved in the choice of, and commitment to, their own learning program of study.
Our curriculum is based on the Principles of Powerful Learning. These Principles were finalized in 2005 and are at the core of best practice teaching at the College. We work from a central core of Christ centred relationships which is demonstrated through a culture of dynamic learning and effective teaching and learning processes. We have a strong belief that all students can learning and have responsibility for their own life long learning.
In 2007, the College is working towards the implementation of the draft ACT Curriculum Framework “Every Chance to Learn” to begin in 2008. The framework details essential content and skills for all students up to Year 10 through its Essential Learning Achievements. There may be some changes to our curriculum structure for Years 7 to 10 once the framework is finalised in late 2007.
As a college catering for students from Years 7 to 12, we have the advantage of being able to systematically scope the sequence of learning to foster high level skill development. We are able to track our students and build on foundational skills to maximize their learning in the senior years. Knowing our students and their strengths and requirements allows us to scaffold learning to allow all students to know a level of success commensurate with their efforts.
